Here are answers to some common questions about donations.
Who can contribute?
Only individuals who are normally resident in Canada can donate to a Canadian political party or campaign.
How much can I contribute?
The maximum that you can contribute to all local parties or campaigns in a given year is $1100.
We understand that most people will not be able to afford to contribute the maximum amount. Whatever amount you can afford to contribute will be appreciated.
What Tax Credits are available for my contribution?
Tax credits for federal political contributions are paid out only if you have a taxable income.
Total annual contributions up to $400 are eligible for a credit of 75% of the contribution, with a maximum credit of $300. That means that a $400 contribution costs you only $100 and a $200 contribution costs you only $50.
Total annual contributions from $400 to $750 are eligible for a tax credit of $300 plus 50% of the amount over $400. The maximum credit is $475. That means that a $500 contribution costs you only $150 and a $750 contribution costs you $275.
Total annual contributions from $750 to $1100 are eligible for a tax credit of $475 plus 33.3% of the amount over $400. The maximum credit is $650.00. That means that a $1000 contribution costs you only $441.67 and an $1100 contribution costs you $591.55.
What if I want to make a contribution to the Ontario NDP instead of to the Federal NDP?
Outside election campaign periods, political donations to the provincial NDP are received and receipted centrally.
