You are invited to celebrate May Day - The International Workers' Day - with an evening of poetry, music, and solidarity, followed by a screening of the documentary film Capitalism A Love Story (Michael Moore).
The event is on Saturday May 1st at 7pm, at St. Marks' Lutheran Church, 825 King Street West, Kitchener (near Grand River Hospital). Admission is free.
This May Day event is being presented in solidarity with the Mexican Hydro Worker's Union (SME) and The Guatemalan Highlands Peasant Committee (CCDA).
This Saturday, January 23, there will be a rally at Waterloo Town Square, from 11 am to 1 pm, to oppose the proroguing of parliament. The Waterloo event is one of many being held across the country to protest the anti-democratic actions of this government.
This is a non-partisan event with speakers from several constituencies; Peter Thurley will be speaking for the NDP at the rally and also speaking at a post-rally event at The Chainsaw (King and Dupont) to collect money for Médecins Sans Frontières Haiti relief efforts.
Andrea Horwath is the keynote speaker at the Kitchener-Waterloo NDP's 2009 Annual General Meeting.
The meeting will be held on Sunday, May 24, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm (doors open at 2:30 pm) at the Adult Recreation Centre in Waterloo. The Adult Rec Centre is located at 185 King Street South (at the corner of King and Allen Streets in Waterloo). Note that, due to construction on Caroline and Allen, access to the parking lot is via King Street.
Voting at the meeting is limited to current members of the Kitchener-Waterloo NDP, but everyone is welcome to attend (and to bring guests).
At a membership meeting on January 4, the KW New Democrats adopted the following resolution to be presented to the Ontario NDP Convention in March, 2009.
PROPOSED WATER PIPELINE TO GREAT LAKES
Taking water from the Great lakes is not a sustainable use of this water, there will be serious negative effects on the water levels that will impact shipping and recreational uses in the Great Lakes.
Be it resolved that The New Democratic Party of Ontario express its disapproval of the proposal by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo to construct a water pipeline from one of the Great Lakes; and that the ONDP caucus take the necessary steps to present a resolution or ‘bill’ in the Ontario Legislative Assembly to have the Province of Ontario reject this unnecessary, costly proposal for a water pipeline.
Kitchener-Waterloo NDP invites you to a Membership Meeting on Sunday January 4, from 1pm to 3pm at the Adult Recreation Centre, 185 King Street S., Waterloo (at the corner of King and Allen).
National events may have been at the front of everyone's mind recently, but provincial politics still matters and this meeting is devoted mainly to the
Provincial New Democratic Party and the current leadership race. At this meeting we will:
• elect delegates to the Ontario NDP Leadership Convention, to be held in Hamilton, March 6-8 2009.
For the first time in 13 years, the Ontario NDP is choosing a new leader. We don't choose our leaders in the back room or pressure all candidates but one to withdraw. In fact, we no longer even limit participation to convention delegates. This time, ALL MEMBERS get to vote on who will lead the party.
The Kitchener-Conestoga NDP will hold their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, October 29, 7:00 pm at their election campaign office at 37 King St. W., Kitchener.
Guest Speakers include Peter Tabuns, Andrea Horwath and Gilles Bisson
The New Democratic candidate for Kitchener-Waterloo in the federal election is Cindy Jacobsen, a Lutheran minister and pastoral counsellor. We are proud to have Cindy as our candidate, and will be working with her during the campaign to get her elected.
You can find the campaign web site at http://www.cindyjacobsen.ca. If you are interested in joining the campaign or sending a message to Cindy, you can do so at http://www.cindyjacobsen.ca/contact.
We've opened up a new area of the web site to host opinion pieces by New Democrats. These are offered in a spirit of constructive discussion - there is no guarantee that they represent party policy or that the views offered are shared by anything other than the author of the piece. You can find them at the Opinion link on the left, or here. A special thanks to Matt Black whose idea this was.
